From Malpensa- take freeway direction Genova A7: Genova East
When approaching Genova take direction for La SPEZIA/Livorno/Pisa (left of Genova)
Continue until RECCO exit (just after a long tunnel)
Exit Recco
take direction for Santa Margherita Ligure/Portofino
continue on in this direction
pass Camogli and other towns
when passing frazione San Lorenzo, you will see a sign for Santa Margherita
Cross the town in direction Portofino
(if you are going to the miramare/regina elena/paraggi or portifino only)
you will pass a harbour aon your left
300 mt after on the right is the Miramare
100 mt farther is the Regina Elena
1 kilometer more is Paraggi and 1.5 km is Portofino

Transit Info from Genova/Pisa Airports
Next Steps! Transit.
Flying In- we suggest flying into Genova if you can which is 40km from Santa Margherita.
The two airports closest to Santa Margherita Ligure are:
The Pisa airport ( http://www.pisa-airport.com/index.php), and
the Genoa Airport ( http://www.aeroportodigenova.com/home)
Upon arrival at either airport, travelers may rent a car to reach the area, or proceed to the nearest train station (see below for information on train travel to SML). There is a train station right inside the Pisa airport, while in Genoa you must take a cab or the #100 airport bus to Genoa' s Principe train station).
BY CAR: Take the A12 autostrada (motorway) to get to the area. Exit at Rapallo and follow signs for Santa Margherita. The "Via Aurelia" (old national road) is more scenic but may be excruciatingly slow, as it is very winding and passes through many towns and villages. For more information consult an itinerary planner such as www.mapquest.com or www.viamichelin.com .
BY TRAIN/BUS: There are frequent trains to Santa Margherita Ligure ( www.trenitalia.com has full schedule and fare information). The area is well served by local buses ( www.tigulliotrasporti.it).

By boat: Travelers heading to Santa Margherita Ligure in the summer can get there via boat from Genoa. Ferry service begins operation in April of each year and goes on through September. www.traghettiportofino.it , www.alimar.ge.it , www.battellierigenova.it .

the map and coastline-Portofino-Paraggi-Sta Margherita LIgure
According to my Italian friends, Paraggi is the place to stay, It's also the closest town to the Wedding site.
Although the 3 towns can make for a gorgeous walk. It will probably take you 45 minutes to walk from Sta Margherita (Imperiale Hotel) to Portofino. Paraggi being the small town that separates Portofino from Santa Margherita. Note there is NO parking in Portofino, but a bus that shuttles between the small towns on a regular basis.

Santa Margherita Ligure is a lovely resort town on the Ligurian Sea on the northwest coast of Italy. Portofino is a fashionable resort town crawling with celebrities. Both have very picturesque harbors, great seafood and a relaxing ambiance. The trail between the two towns is one of the favorites of hikers.
The distance is only about 3 miles, or 5 kilometers.
Portofino cannot be reached by train, so train travelers disembark at Santa Margherita Ligure. It is a short walk to the harbor with wonderful cafes and lovely boats. From the harbor in Santa Margherita Ligure, simply follow the harbor and sea coast and soon you are walking along the sea, past beaches laden with sun worshipers and secret pirate coves. At the tiny town of Paraggi, the trail takes up to the right side of the road on a nice paved/gravel path through the woods.
Reaching Portofino, you walk between stone walls and finally dive down to the tiny harbor stacked with million-dollar yachts and colorful fishing boats. The walker may choose to take the inexpensive ferry back to Santa Margherita Ligure or may walk back or take the bus.

PLANES, TRAINS & AUTOMOBILES-GETTING THERE
BY PLANE-
FROM GENOA
Genoa has a small but efficient airport which is very well connected with downtown Genoa and its main train stations (Brignole and Porta Principe). Please visit Cristoforo Colombo airport web site for more information about the incoming fly routes. If you cannot find a flight to Genoa, please consider Milan as an alternative destination.
To reach Santa Margherita from Genoa (Cristoforo Colombo) airport you can either:
1) take a taxi (about 50Km distance, 30 to 40 minutes time, about 55 euros fare: check with the driver before boarding), or
2) reach Brignole train station either with a taxi (6Km, 10 minutes time, 10-15 euros fare) or with the “Volabus” airport shuttle which leaves you in front of the station (2.07 euros for a one-way ticket, and you can purchase the tickets on the bus). See the Volabus timetable for more information about the bus schedule. From Brignole you can continue your journey to Santa Margherita by train (see “By train” instructions below).

FROM MILAN
To reach Santa Margherita from Milan (either Malpensa or Linate) airport you should take a shuttle bus to Milano Centrale train station (see here for more information about the shuttle to/from Malpensa). Option arriving from NY: From the Pisa airport (150 km from Santa Margherita) (Delta from NY arrives here, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday & Sunday).
Arriving from London: British airways from Gatwick, Ryan Air from Stantsed fly into Pisa or Genova twice a day.
From Pisa you can hop the train at the airport very easily to the right of arrivals. Tickets can be purchased at the ticket counter " Biglietteria Ferrovie dello Stato" . Take the train in the direction towards Genova> Make sure you take the interegionalee which makes most stops including Santa Margherita Ligure.

Santa Margherita is a small municipality with only one train station on the Genoa-La Spezia-Rome railway. If you are leaving from Genoa (either Brignole or Principe) take a “regionale” train with final destination Sestri Levante or La Spezia. This kind of train most often stops at Santa Margherita but check on the timetable to be sure.
If you are leaving from Milan, consider reaching Genoa using either an “Intercity” (relatively expensive, but comfortable) or “Interregionale” (cheaper, less comfortable).There are several final destinations that could be of use but be sure to check whether the train makes at least one stop in Genoa or Rapallo. “Intercity” and “Interregionale” trains most often do not stop at Santa Margherita so you should probably stop in Genoa or Rapallo and take another train from here. Rapallo is very close to Santa Margherita, so you can consider taking a taxi from there (6 Km distance, about 10 minutes, 10-15 euros fare). Consider placing a reservation for a seat when you travel by train from Milan to Genoa or Rapallo: it is a little more expensive, but it gives you some additional peace of mind.

About Pesto
Visitors flock to Liguria for poetic riviera vistas, Portofino's Tinseltown glamour, and Genoa's raffish, salty allure. I came craving the region's magical amalgam of basil, oil, and cheese.
To eat pesto in Liguria is to know it for the first time. My own baptism took place almost a decade ago, at Balzi Rossi, a rather staid Michelin-starred restaurant on the Italian-French border. From across the room, I caught a whiff of my lasagnette al pesto—its perfume so delicate, and yet completely pervasive. The lasagnette shimmered in a swathe of green, like just-sprouted grass. The dish was oceans away from the pesto most of us know: that discolored paste with enough garlic to stun an army of vampires.
